Team History

The organization began play as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in 1941 before moving to Detroit in 1957. The Pistons own nine division titles, seven conference titles, and three championships. As of the 2018-19 season, there are 11 retired numbers within the organization.

After several decades of struggles, the Pistons turned things around in a big way during the “Bad Boys” era from 1980-1994. Detroit fans enjoyed years of success thanks in large part to physical, intimidating play from Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, and others. The Pistons won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990.

Detroit’s most recent title came in 2004 with Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, and Tayshaun Prince leading the way.

Current Pistons Hall of Famers include Dave Bing, Bob Lanier, Thomas, Joe Dumars, Rodman, Grant Hill, and George Yardley.
