Team History

Before becoming the Red Wings in 1932, the team was known as the Cougars and Falcons. As of 2018, the Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships of any NHL franchise based in the United States. Detroit is often referred to as “Hockeytown,” which has been a registered trademark owned by the organization since 1996.

The Red Wings are one of the most consistent teams not just in the NHL, but across professional sports. In fact, they made the playoffs in 25 straight years from 1990-91 to 2015-16, which was, at the time, the longest streak of postseason appearances in all of North American sports.

Detroit has won 19 division championships, six conference championships, and 11 Stanley Cups, with the most recent being in 2007-08. There are currently 63 former players and 11 builders of the sport in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
