Team History

The organization began play in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers before moving to Edmonton the following season. After joining the NHL, the Oilers went on to win five Stanley Cups in the 1980s, earning a ‘dynasty’ label by the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Few teams in the NHL have enjoyed a similar amount of success as the Oilers. Entering the 2018-19 season, Edmonton owns nine division championships, seven conference championships, and the aforementioned five Stanley Cups.

Wayne Gretzky, known as “The Great One,” played with the Oilers from 1978 to 1988 and led the team to four of those Stanley Cups. Gretzky remains atop many of the organization’s statistical categories, including points, goals, and assists. The numbers of Gretzky, Al Hamilton, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and Grant Fuhr are all retired by the Oilers.

Today, the Oilers are led by 21-year-old Connor McDavid, considered the best player in the world by many hockey experts. Shop our selection of Oilers photos today.
