Team History

The Los Angeles Kings began play as part of the 1967 NHL expansion. Entering the 2018-19 campaign, Los Angeles owns one division championship, three conference championships, and a pair of Stanley Cups. The Kings play their home games at Staples Center.

You can’t discuss the Kings franchise without discussing the impact of Wayne Gretzky, also known as “The Great One.” Gretzky, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Edmonton Oilers in 1988, became the league’s all-time leading scorer with Los Angeles in 1990. After being an integral piece to the organization for eight years, the Kings traded Gretzky to St. Louis.

Gretzky isn’t the only star player to wear a Kings uniform. The numbers of Rob Blake, Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, Luc Robitaille, and Rogie Vachon are all retired within the organization. In addition, 17 former players and three builders of the NHL are currently recognized in the Hall of Fame.
